Files

Files are media items that are uploaded directly into Pagedip. Files can be added to page content, used in other media and used for Page/Media settings that accept files (i.e. cover images).

When you upload files into Pagedip, they are added to the current Pagedip you're working on. Any user or other Pagedip that has access to the current Pagedip will also have access to the files.

Like other Media items, you can add tags and change the the title of the Media. Files also have unique settings, including variants and alt tags.

Variants

Variants is an advanced feature that allows us to use different versions of a file in different situations. For example, when an image is uploaded we automatically generate two extra variants - an optimized image that has been compressed and resized, and a small thumbnail sized version. We end up with three variants total for images: "original", "optimized" and "thumb".

When a theme renders a file, it can select which variant is best suited for the use. When no specific variant is provided, the file's primary variant will be used. You can choose which variant you'd like to use as the primary.

Replacing a Variant

One powerful feature of Files is the ability to replace a file with a new one while maintaining the same reference. For example, if you have a company logo File that has been used in many places across multiple Pagedips, it is possible to update the File in one place and have the change reflected in all instances of the File, easily keeping your content's branding up-to-date.

Using Custom Variants

To fully make use of custom variants, you'll need to work with your theme developer to set up templates that use them. The implementation will be specific to your use case and creativity with the template. For example, there could be a photo gallery that uses "thumbnail" variants for previews, "optimized" variants for expanded views and "360" variants for an immersive view.

The other way to use variants without integrating with your theme is to switch which variant is selected as the primary.
